Douay Rheims Bible
The Douay Rheims Bible is a traditional English translation of the Bible produced by English Catholic scholars in exile at the English College in Douai (later Rheims) in the late 16th and early 17th century. It was translated directly from the Latin Vulgate, rather than from the original Hebrew and Greek texts. Because the Vulgate was declared authoritative by the Council of Trent, the Douay–Rheims reflects a strong commitment to Latin wording and structure, often resulting in more formal, archaic English. Its vocabulary also preserves theological terms such as “justification,” “charity,” and “penance” in ways that align closely with traditional Catholic doctrine.
The Douay–Rheims Bible is more literal to the Latin tradition and carries a distinctly classical, reverent tone.
